Margaret Rogers grew up in a large family in a small town on the prairie, lively and free-spirited. But in high school, God called her. In 1963, she entered the convent to become Sister Zoe. And then she was called again.

CALLED THE MAKING UNMAKING OF A NUN eBook MARGE ROGERS BARRETT

Whether Marge Rogers Barrett is in her "Peggy," "Margaret," "Sister Zoe" or "Marge" phase of life, the one thing that never changes is her strong sense of self. She is smart, curious, funny, and she is fair. She is a lover of life, of family, and of God. Even after Barrett leaves the convent, being called to another life, she never wavers in her dedication to serve and continues to give to the world with genuine love and absolute commitment. Barrett is champion of the underdog (even an actual under dog) and presents characters from her life who are vivid and who will stay with the reader long after the book is put down. I felt as if I knew her parents intimately; I understood how "no one got in Mom's way" and I could easily see her father with his bright optimism, hatching yet another plan. And as I'm sure all readers of this book will, I fell in love with Patty. This memoir celebrates Barrett's family of origin and in doing so celebrates the family of which we are all a part. Barrett offers us her lovely story with a sassy sense of humor, with honesty, and with care.

CALLED THE MAKING UNMAKING OF A NUN eBook MARGE ROGERS BARRETT Reviews

Follow Marge’s memoir story and faith journey as she moves from an adventurous, mischievous, active and determined child in the confines of a small Minnesota prairie town thru strict, cloistered convent life and ultimately to marriage, motherhood and life of service, social activism, and teaching. As we read, we meet members of her enthusiastic, hardworking, fun loving, and lively progressive family. Faith is their pillar, and her family members show their strength by living and leading by their convictions through heartache and challenges. We see the lifelong impact of her experience watching the outside activism of the 60’s and 70’s from within the walls of her convent as she simultaneously encounters personal obstacles and opportunities afforded by the 2nd Vatican council and subsequent upheaval within the Catholic Church. At each family visit, her father asks, “Are you sure you are happy?”. Her story and the environment in which she lived come alive with vivid details, concisely told. I highly recommend this entertaining and inspirational memoir.
Very interesting read....
I agree with the review by Bibliophile, but was more disappointed. There is very little about religious life and too much about her family prior to her entering and her life after she left. Unmaking of a Nun is a much better choice.
Wonderful memoir! I knew the family. Our parents were friends. It brought back a million memories for me. Glendalynne Bennett Beauzay
Item arrived on time and as described
The last chapter in the book, "From Fate," is an example of excellent writing. This incident could easily have been overwritten, but the author's choice of detail and the tension and pace are nigh onto perfect.
A delightful and engaging book with characters you'd love to get to know better over a cup of coffee. Brought back many memories of growing up in a small Minnesota town and my spiritual journey from childhood to a mature adult.
Well written and easy to read!
